You know what happens when you can’t make it to your branch meeting…you often get volunteered for things whether you like it or not!

Last night we had a great turn out at Swans Brew Pub in Victoria for a little networking and some calendar planning. Thirteen members sat around the table and shared ideas on what they would like to see happening this year on the Island. After some exciting discussion, a few members volunteered to take on some new roles at the branch level:

On-line Registration Manager – Ed Moniz
Communications – Daphne Carlyle
Poster Boy – Jesse Bone (not in attendance)

We are still looking for a co-chair in Victoria to help support Lance in his role. Although we had some interest in this postition last night, we don’t have a commitment, so if you’re interested in being a part of this fantastic team of people on the island, please contact Lance Sullivan.

Thanks to all our new volunteers!

Congratulations to the nine successful members from BC achieving ten National Accreditation. The judging took place in Halifax at the National Convention.

The Members and the their chosen accreditation categories are listed below

Ian Bull Fine Art Home Decor

Chris Collacott Nature and Pictorial Scenic

Susie Crichton Children & Infant Portrait

Erin Duff Children & Infant Portrait

Keiko Imaizumi Wildlife

Yunfang Liang Pictorial Scenic

Mercedes Verrier Environmental Portrait

Paul Wright Wildlife

BC still has an incredible first time entry acceptance rate because of the Accreditation Pre-Selection Review. We can boast we are the leaders of the pack in designing this stepping stone to success for the National Accreditation Process. You can check out the PPOC website on how to submit follow this link http://www.ppoc-bc.ca/accreditation/how-to-submit/

I had the privilege of being one of the judges for the National Accreditation and I just thought I would comment on a few common mistakes or omissions that can cause an accreditation to be unaccepted. There are many listed on the website http://www.ppoc.ca/accreditation.php in the General Submissions PDF document.

In the document it addresses several common factors such as images that are too light, not sharp, or are posed with one flash on camera, or the photo is not retouched or unfinished. There are more but please read the document for further insight at your leisure.

I want to talk about some other common factors that may result in an unaccepted submission.

# 1. What I would like to touch on is the fact that some members fail to READ THE CATEGORY requirements. Let’s take Category 27 Family Portraits as an example. It states:

“Ten images of ten different families showing ten different poses from ten different sessions in ten different locations. Must have variety in the submission to show the photographers creative and technical ability. Head and shoulders, 3/4 and full length poses must be shown. Family group must consist of three individuals or more. Must include three images with a group of six individuals or larger. Four images must be environmental portraits, and four images must be indoor portraits. The remaining two can be either environmental or indoor. No wedding/engagement portraits are accepted in this category.”

WOW that one is a mouth full if you try and read it out loud several times, but that is what you need to do. Read it to make sure the requirements are covered. That sounds simple, but is so overlooked. For the members that use the Pre Selection Review we are usually quick to catch this and assist you in correction, but we are human after all, and also we give guidance on the images but you pick the final 10 out the 15 that you can submit. What this long windedness is about is MAKE SURE THE CATEGORY REQUIREMENTS ARE COVERED. It is in capitals because it needs to be yelled!

Back to the category…If you miss out on even one of the requirements your submission will be rejected. I picked category 27 as it has the most requirements in one paragraph then any other accreditation. (Go ahead read them all and prove me wrong LOL)

# 2 Your images for accreditation can only be used once. If you have used it in a previous accreditation submission it can no longer be used. If however an image has been submitted as a salon image for Provincials or Nationals it can be used in an accreditation submission. (In one category only)

# 3 Variety You must have variety in your submission. Prove to the judges that you have skills that are above the average by showing good variety. Your submission should have various lighting conditions, and a good cross section of the subject matter in the chosen accreditation . And see rule # 1 make sure all the submission requirements are taken care of.

# 4 Dodge & Burn This is seen in a variety of submissions. The overuse or poor use of the dodge and burn tool, or various software, actions etc to achieve that look. A helpful hint is to paste your image on to a white background and look at all the areas in your photo and see if your technique is uniform or overdone. You can do this same process on a black background to see if any areas need attention.

# 5 Over Retouching. Careful with retouching the faces. There were some submissions where they appeared to have used software to retouch the faces and they had that ” plastic” skin appearance. Especially on the men that technique and others can be overused and heavy on the application of the submission. One other note was the removal of the dark semicircle of the eyes. There is a natural slight darkness under the eye. Total removal of this looks unnatural.

#6 Just because you can doesn’t always mean you have to! Beware of texture overlays and fancy borders. They can help or hurt an image and at times they distract from the image that is to be judged. Sometimes the KISS principle is best.

# 7 Go for it and have FUN. My challenge to you is to pick a category and GO FOR IT. Accreditation deadlines left for 2012 are July 15th and October 15th. If you are going to submit for Pre Selection Process please submit early to avoid disappointment. Don’t leave it until the last minute, as it is not fair to the judges or the volunteers that look after this service that is a free membership benefit.

The PPOC Northern Branch got a real workout on May 6th in Prince George with Melissa Welsh. Twenty-five photographers attended Melissa’s Total Weddings Workout in Prince George to prepare us for the busy upcoming wedding season. Melissa shared a tonne of tips and tricks on capturing fun and natural images of her couples. The morning portion of the workshop, Melissa, discussed marketing, how to get to know your couple, reputation building, pricing, album and product sales. In the afternoon, we were joined by Aimee and Tyler and saw Melissa in action with an engagement session with this fabulous couple. Participants also had the opportunity to practice their posing and directing skills using each other as models.

Melissa’s workshop was absolutely FABULOUS! Her energy and passion was quite contagious and left participants wanting more. We had a number of new photographers as well as several seasoned Pro’s attend this workout. There is no doubt we all walked away with new ideas to offer our clients.

A huge shout out to one of our trade members Album Epoca who donated four gift certificates for albums and given to four lucky attendees.

This year our provincial board is promoting the idea of skills training and information at our lower mainland and other branch meetings. Taking a page from last year’s very well attended and informative Lightroom seminar with Aura McKay, held at the New Westminster Quay hotel, our lower mainland branch put on another very useful skills oriented session with Mary Jensen at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club last week. We had over thirty very enthusiastic attendees and Mary had a wonderful presentation, although I didn’t make it myself as I was enroute from Halifax that evening.

The next upcoming presentation will be from Jillian Kirby, on May 28th and she will be discussing, “Posing for Newborns”. This is clearly an area which is developing a great deal of interest at the present time and a presentation on this very exciting topic will I am sure be of great interest to many of our members. We have not finalized a venue yet for this presentation but will be doing that shortly. We are in a little bit of flux with our venues at the moment and will keep you informed as the Lower Mainland Branch moves forward in finding possible new locations. Certainly suggestions from our general membership are very welcome. Please do not hesitate to make your comments and ideas known here in the comments section of this blog.

Suggestions of skills oriented speakers are also very welcome as well and we would again encourage our membership to make use of the comments section of this blog to make their views known. Hey, the more information and ideas we have from our membership, the better or organization will become.
